When is armistice day 2017

Armistice Day is celebrated on November 11 each year, and this year it falls on a Saturday. This armistice took place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in , which is why the UK holds two minutes of silence at 11am every November It was signed in Compiegne in Northern France and forced Germans to evacuate invaded countries within a two-week period.

However, after the outbreak of WWII, many countries changed the name of this day, with members of the Commonwealth choosing to call it Remembrance Day.

In the UK, it is now known as both. Remembrance Sunday is held on the second Sunday of November and this year it will take place on Sunday November This service will be attended by members of the Royal Family , the Government, representatives from the armed forces and the public.

This service will see a further two-minute silence held at 11am before wreaths are laid and the Royal Marine buglers play The Last Post. John McCrae described the devastation of the battle destroying the land whilst the poppies remained.

Since then the poppy has become the symbol of remembrance and is worn by millions of people leading up to the 11th November to show support whilst also being used in various ceremonies throughout the day and Remembrance Sunday. The Royal British Legion now sells poppies to raise money for people who served during the war and their families.

This year it falls on Sunday 12th November and is a chance for ceremonies to take place in honour of the fallen soldiers and their families. Members of the Royal Family, retired soldiers and some members of parliament are led by the queen in the Cenotaph Commemorations in London.
